12/17/2019: Winter Solstice New Building Update

Many members and friends of the Buddhist Temple of Toledo are curious about the progress of our new building. I'm happy to shed a little light during this dark solstice time and write to you with an update.

For much of this autumn, we have been waiting on approval of a revised site plan that includes small changes requested by the Toledo City Plan Commission. These include a wider driveway turning radius to make the space accessible for emergency vehicles, improving stormwater drainage, and modifying landscaping for increased privacy. Another priority of the revised plan was to preserve more mature, old-growth trees on Temple property.

As of November 25, the new Temple building has final site plan approval, including the requested modifications and more preserved trees. You can check out the new Temple's landscaping plan and interior layout at the bottom of this post!

This week, the Temple site will undergo a final environmental inspection. Once the site passes the inspection, construction of the parking lot and building foundation will begin immediately. In preparation for this, yesterday on Monday, December 16, materials like manhole covers and catch basins were delivered to the site in order to begin work on the parking lot area.

Work has also begun shaping the new walking meditation trails that willd wind through the woods on the property. Check those out in Rinsen Roshi's recent Abbot's Address video posted to Facebook.

Now that our final site plan is approved, our building contractor has submitted for a building permit, which we expect to receive sometime in the next week. Once the parking lot and building foundation are complete, the contractor can begin working on the Temple itself.

All this means that we hope to see the beginning of the building itself in the next month or two. Even during the winter months, the building contractor plans to put up the walls and the roof to work on electrical and plumbing components inside. The current estimation for building completion and our official move is late 2020.
